Connected Generation 2010: Social Media & Work with Youth People

This one day conference provides an opportunity for managers, practitioners, volunteers and educators in the youth sector to:
  • Get an overview of how digital technologies are impacting upon young people's lives;
  • Explore ways to support young people to navigate the digital world;
  • Learn about different ways to use digital and online tools as part of their work with young people;
  • Network with other practitioners, and address the issues that matter to you through open space discussions.

Following on from two unConference events organised by Youth Work Online, Connected Generation 2010 combines expert input with open space discussions. On May 7th we'll be exploring the future of work with young people in a digital age - identifying challenges, opportunities and practical learning for organisations that work with young people.

The morning will include keynote talks from:

The morning will be chaired by Tim Davies, director of Practical Participation, convener of the Youth Work Online Community and co-author of the Youth Work & Social Networking Report.

The day will also include a range of pre-arranged practical workshops, including streams on:

  • Promoting youth services online;
  • Building digital literacy;
  • Social media for participation;
  • Youth work in the online world;

And in the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to set the agenda and discuss the issues that matter to you, through a facilitated 'open space' session, complemented with input from invited experts.

Open Space topics could include:

  • Using social media in careers advice;
  • Addressing online safety concerns;
  • Twitter as a professional development tool for practitioners;
  • Convincing management to allow access to social media;
  • Managing access to social media;
  • Hands on guide to setting up your own social network profile;
  • Building or commissioning social network applications;
  • Social reporting as a youth participation approach;
  • Teaching social media skills in youth work or social work training;
  • And much more....

Bring your own ideas for open space topics on the day.
